Runaway with Bonnie Raitt now

Originally a 1961 chart-topper by Del Shannon, “Runaway” is a song built on teen anxiety and pop sheen. Raitt doesn’t just cover it—she reclaims it. Her interpretation tears into the emotional undercurrent of the lyrics with a slow-burning growl and a swampy slide guitar that turns longing into lament

Top 5 Questions: Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London"

Top 5 Questions

The Story Behind Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London"
1
What 1935 horror movie sparked the idea for this rock classic?
Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers was watching late-night television when he caught the 1935 film "Werewolf of London." Inspired by the title, he suggested to his touring keyboardist Warren Zevon that they adapt it for a song and dance craze.
2
How long did it actually take to write this legendary song?
Just 15 minutes. Warren Zevon, LeRoy Marinell, and Waddy Wachtel knocked out the entire song in a quarter-hour session. When Wachtel heard the werewolf concept, he immediately howled "Aahoooh" – which became the iconic chorus.
3
Which real London restaurant gets namechecked in the lyrics?
Lee Ho Fook's was an actual Chinese restaurant on Gerrard Street in London's Chinatown. The restaurant embraced its musical fame, keeping a photo of Warren Zevon on display until it closed in 2008.
4
Why was Jackson Browne performing the song before Zevon recorded it?
Jackson Browne heard the lyrics the day after they were written and immediately recognized the song's potential. He began performing "Werewolves of London" at his concerts as early as 1975 – three years before Zevon recorded it.
5
If the song was written in 15 minutes, why did recording take forever?
Despite being spontaneous, "Werewolves of London" proved incredibly difficult to capture in the studio. Producers cycled through at least seven different band configurations because the song needed to sound "stupid enough" rather than "cute."
