My first exposure to Mandolin Orange was an early, first year, performance of Mandolin Orange at The ENO festival river stage. It was Andrew’s deep Southern baritone that lured me to the small shade stage in a stand of trees. A mix of lyrically mature, subtle well-crafted songs, kept me close to the stage for the rest of the set. This duo was different from the average blend of Eno performers that year and certainly chronologically younger than the majority.
Little Feat were the backing band for Robert Palmer’s 1974 debut, Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley; George played slide on five of the eight tracks, and the album opens with a cover of Feat’s own song “Sailin’ Shoes.” He both played on and produced Bonnie Raitt’s Takin’ My Time in 1973, and in return Raitt sang on his first solo album. His slide guitar can be found on albums by James Taylor, John Cale, and Jackson Browne, and he produced the Grateful Dead’s Shakedown Street.
Martin Frost is a clarinetist musician extraordinaire. My late discovery of his immense and sublime featured soloist talent/proficiency came while writing the “Why Amadeus ” article. Whether we find Martin playing Mozart Concertos for Clarinet, Bach, Haydn, or Rhumbas by Chick Corea, he excels with fluidity, expertise, perfect articulation, control, and humility
