There’s a reason you find yourself returning to Crazy Stupid Love on an idle Sunday evening, letting its familiar rhythms pull you back into the soft chaos of its orbit. The film’s charm is not in grand revelations but in the small, bruised truths it leaves in its wake: the quiet desperation of a man at the end of his marriage, the shimmering confidence of a younger man unsure where it should take him, and the ordinary ache of people trying, clumsily, to love each other without losing themselves. It’s a story that repeats because it feels like ours—messy, sincere, a little foolish, and, in its best moments, tender enough to believe in again.

Something about the film Crazy Stupid Love draws me in to watch it again. We know some of the reasons Crazy Stupid Love works for us have a lot to do with human frailty and the sagas that make up an average life. The Dan Fogelman script wins one over because, though a bit formulaic, it succeeds due to the strength of the four primary actors and each of the ancillary family and neighborhood actors and roles. Crazy, Stupid, Love is not a vehicle film for one shining star, but a great ensemble work featuring Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling, and Emma Stone. The chemistry between the principal actors is strong, and the story arcs unfold naturally throughout the film’s narrative. One must suspend belief at times when the script provides Marisa Tomei with a one-dimensional spurned female role acting opportunity. One of the chief reasons I enjoyed this film was the opportunity to view Steve Carrell’s acting gifts and beyond sitcom comedy. Playing the worst baffled boss of an almost defunct paper company in economically vibrant Scranton, PA, in the Office for many years enhanced his alchemical gifts to float seamlessly between comedy and drama. This film also deepened our appreciation for Ryan Gosling’s confident acting talents. Ryan became his faithful, on-screen, charismatic self in this film, mainly due to the ensemble support from Steve Carell. The camera adores Ryan and utilizes his leading man’s good looks to transition adeptly into a modern-day Cary Grant insouciance.

A film like Crazy Stupid Love doesn’t just entertain; it lingers. Critic A.O. Scott of the New York Times noted it as “a romantic comedy that manages to be smart, goofy, and heartfelt all at once.” The New Yorker highlighted its “sharp script and an ensemble that dances between farce and genuine emotional stakes.” Rolling Stone praised Ryan Gosling’s charisma, calling it “proof that Hollywood still has room for a leading man with effortless charm.” And for many fans, like Emma W. on Letterboxd, “I’ve rewatched Crazy Stupid Love so many times it’s become comfort food for my heart.”

Ryan Gosling's best scenes in Crazy Stupid Love

I love Steve Carrell and Julianne Moore, but Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s scenes are the highlights of ‘Crazy Stupid Love’ for me. Everything in this video is not mine, and Warner Bros. owns it I’m just a fan of the movie.

About Crazy, Stupid, Love: Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling lead an all-star cast in Crazy, Stupid, Love. Fortysomething straight-laced Cal Weaver (Carell) is living the dream—a good job, a nice house, great kids, and marriage to his high school sweetheart, Emily (Julianne Moore). So when Cal learns that his wife has cheated on him and wants a divorce, his “perfect” life quickly unravels. Cal, who hasn’t dated in decades, stands out as the epitome of un-smooth so handsome player Jacob Palmer (Gosling) takes him on as wingman and protégé, opening Cal’s eyes to the many options before him: flirty women, manly drinks, and a sense of style. Despite Cal’s makeover and his many new conquests, the one thing that can’t be made over is his heart, which seems to keep leading Cal back to where he began.
