Ben Howard’s presence in the 2014 Austin to Boston documentary was a musical revelation. Amidst five old VW camper vans, four bands, three thousand miles, and two weeks of navigating the rustic highways between Austin and Boston, Howard emerged as one of the standout artists. His hypnotic finger-picking guitar style, rich with complex rhythmic patterns, and his warm, soulful voice, struck a deep chord with anyone who tuned in. The documentary itself, narrated by Gill Landry, chronicles a timeworn style of touring—raw, stripped back, and intimate—capturing the essence of independent music. As rainstorms and mechanical failures brought the musicians closer, their shared humanity—and Howard’s ability to harness both the vulnerability and power of his songs—became more pronounced.
Born in West London and raised in Devon, UK, Howard is no stranger to coastal life, and his connection to the ocean permeates much of his artistic identity. An avid surfer, he often finds solace and inspiration from the water, crafting songs that capture the ebb and flow of life with a similar energy. His introspective lyricism evokes a sense of movement—whether emotional or physical—and his melodies are often as unpredictable and soothing as the waves he rides.
Howard’s care for the oceans extends beyond his music, as he has been a vocal advocate for environmental sustainability, frequently supporting ocean conservation efforts. His participation in the Surfers Against Sewage charity, which fights plastic pollution and climate change affecting marine ecosystems, is one example of his commitment to causes larger than his artistry.
Musically, Ben Howard’s career has seen a natural evolution. His debut album, Every Kingdom (2011), brought him international acclaim, thanks to tracks like “Keep Your Head Up” and “Only Love,” which became modern anthems for a new generation of folk-leaning singer-songwriters. His sophomore effort, I Forget Where We Were (2014), delved deeper into the experimental realm, blending more atmospheric and layered instrumentation, revealing a complexity in his sound that continues to grow. His latest album, Collections from the Whiteout (2021), produced by Aaron Dessner of The National, marks Howard’s foray into even more textured, electronically-influenced music. Yet, even in this sonic expansion, Howard’s signature vocal style—soft yet commanding—and his lyrical exploration of identity and personal reflection remain intact.
Touring has been a constant thread in Howard’s career, and his live performances further solidify his reputation as a musical craftsman. Whether playing sold-out festivals or more intimate venues, Howard’s shows are immersive experiences that pull the audience into his world. Fans are drawn to his ability to create something intensely personal yet universally resonant, a hallmark of the most impactful songwriters.
For those first introduced to Ben Howard through Austin to Boston, his journey has been a revelation—a testament to the enduring power of simplicity in music. His guitar playing and voice may have drawn people in, but his environmental activism, commitment to his craft, and dedication to creating new musical landscapes have kept them listening.
5 old VW camper vans. 4 bands. 3 thousand miles. 2 weeks. 1 gloriously backward tour. The adventure starts after a fire-fuelled final night at Austin’s SXSW Music Festival, where the bands (Ben Howard, The Staves, Nathaniel Rateliff, Bear’s Den) pile into their rides and head northeast. They play everywhere from bars to barns, rooms to rooftops, packing out tiny venues and wowing crowds with their unique sounds.
But heavy rainstorms, multiple breakdowns, and cramped conditions remind them that to push through sometimes you need to pull together. Featuring Mumford & Sons’ Ben Lovett and narrated by Gill Landry this documentary is about a modern tour, done the old-fashioned way.

The fact that this has almost as many views as the single one makes me smile. He’s an artist that should never be confined to the studio, hearing any of his stuff live is like listening to another song.

Here is a better live EQ for Ben and India, et al.
[Chorus 1]
While the faithful dispose of a generation
And all of the mountains rumble knowingly
I order a colada and sit to count my dollars
And watch eagles soar in circles
Perpetually
[Bridge]
Forever, forever
Such a beautiful thing
[Chorus 2]
Now I am older, I don’t look over my shoulder
I know what is there in front of me
Ten Marlboro cigarettes I’ve rolled the butts into the bottle tops
Today I will stare at the sea
Till my eyes have had enough
[Outro]
Enough, enough
Is that enough?

We want you to know
Echo Auto connects to Alexa through the Alexa app on your phone and uses your existing smartphone data plan. Carrier charges may apply. Check if your vehicle’s air vents are compatible with the included mount.
Will this connect to my car?
Echo Auto connects to most cars that support Bluetooth to play music or have an auxiliary input. Check if your vehicle is compatible with Echo Auto via Bluetooth.
I was given a beta test tryout of Alexa Auto last year and utilized it on several long car trips. My 2013 Honda does not connect directly via Bluetooth to the Echo Auto; instead, we secure the echo with a cable through the auxiliary portal. My smartphone is the Bluetooth connection conduit for Alexa and my Bluetooth port, adding data usage on long car trips. One important caveat: Best to utilize a home wireless network during the initial setup steps. This initial setup at home will save you countless hours/headaches when remotely establishing the initial setup. The initial setup process is quick and easy with following instructions via your automobile Bluetooth system. My recommendation applies to the very first time you set up Alexa auto in your car.
