Carly Rae Jepsen: The Pop Sensation Who’s More Than Just ‘Call Me Maybe’
Carly Rae Jepsen may have rocketed to global fame with the irresistibly catchy “Call Me Maybe,” but reducing her to a one-hit wonder sells short an artist who has become one of pop music’s most compelling storytellers. Over the years, Jepsen has crafted a unique lane for herself—merging synth-pop brilliance with lyrics that offer a surprising emotional depth. While her early success was catalyzed by a well-timed shoutout from Justin Bieber, Jepsen has since cemented herself as an artist whose evolution deserves far more attention.
We’ve all heard the fairy tale story: Jepsen gets discovered, signs a record deal, and becomes a household name virtually overnight. But treating her career like a pop Cinderella tale ignores the vast expanse of artistry she’s created since then. Her albums, from Kiss to the critically acclaimed Emotion and Dedicated, are layered with shimmering synths and melodic hooks, but they also reveal Jepsen’s deeper commitment to the craft of songwriting. She’s an artist who works tirelessly behind the scenes, fine-tuning songs until they hit that perfect intersection of heart and pop appeal.
Jepsen’s music isn’t just catchy—it’s immersive. On albums like Emotion, she navigates the highs and lows of love with a rare sincerity. Tracks like “Run Away With Me” and “Your Type” don’t just beckon you to sing along; they invite you into the emotional core of the experience. Her ability to weave together anthemic beats with nuanced emotion is what sets her apart from the crowded pop field. Carly Rae Jepsen isn’t just following trends; she’s shaping them, guiding pop music toward something more introspective yet still explosively fun.
We at Cool Media admittedly came late to the Carly Rae Jepsen party. While some media outlets, like NPR, were early advocates for her pop brilliance, it wasn’t until January 2nd, 2023, that her collaboration with Rufus Wainwright truly grabbed our attention. “The Loneliest Time,” a duet full of camp and character, highlighted her ability to merge her signature sound with Wainwright’s dramatic, theatrical flair. It was an unexpected pairing that not only worked but also showcased Jepsen’s versatility as an artist unafraid to experiment with genre and form.
This collaboration was more than just a musical side note; it felt like a new chapter for Jepsen. Here was an artist who could transition seamlessly from delivering chart-topping pop singles to creating lush, narrative-driven duets with one of music’s most unique voices. Jepsen’s evolution into this collaborative, theatrical realm highlights her adaptability and her desire to push the boundaries of what pop music can be.
At the core of Carly Rae Jepsen’s work is a genuine emotional resonance. Where many pop stars lean on surface-level hooks, Jepsen digs deeper. Her lyrics often grapple with love, longing, and self-reflection, imbuing her songs with a complexity that resonates with listeners well beyond the dance floor. It’s this ability to marry infectious melodies with emotional honesty that makes her music not only addictive but enduring.
So why write about Carly Rae Jepsen now? Simply put: her music has staying power. The more you listen, the more layers you uncover. Take The Loneliest Time, for example. On the surface, it’s a fun, theatrical romp, but underneath, it’s a song about connection and isolation, about yearning for something just out of reach. It’s the kind of track you loop not just for the chorus, but for the way it makes you feel—a bittersweet blend of hope and melancholy. This is the magic of Jepsen. She can make you want to dance and cry in the same breath, leaving you feeling like you’ve experienced something deeply personal.
Carly Rae Jepsen is more than just a chart-topper. She’s a storyteller, a collaborator, and an artist who, time and again, manages to connect with her audience in surprising and heartfelt ways. Her career is a testament to the fact that great pop music doesn’t just live in the moment—it lingers, it grows, and it sticks with you long after the chorus fades. For that, we’re here for Carly Rae Jepsen, and if you’ve ever found yourself singing along to one of her tracks, you probably are too.

Lyrics
I’ve had one of those bad dreams
Where we’re standing on your street
I quit smoking those cigarettes
But I’m never getting over it
And you’re looking right through me
Just like Shakespeare wrote a tragedy
‘Bout our story never finished it
‘Cause our love, we never finished it
I’m coming over tonight
Knock on your door just like before
I need that look in your eyes (look in your eyes)
‘Cause we’ve had the loneliest time (loneliest time)
I’m thinking all through the night (all through the night)
I could be yours just like before
Rewrite another try
‘Cause we’ve had the loneliest time
If you wanna try it if you wanna try me
If you wanna try, love, if you leave the light on for me
If you wanna try it if you wanna try it
If you wanna try, love
I’ve had more of those bad dreams
You were ten feet in front of me
I went running, but I couldn’t catch
Just the shadow of your silhouette
Then you spoke the words to me
When you left, I still need to unpack it
Let’s save sorry for another night
‘Cause this time, love, we’re gonna get it right
I’m coming over tonight (over tonight)
Knock on your door just like before
I need that look in your eyes (look in your eyes)
‘Cause we’ve had the loneliest time (loneliest time)
I’m thinking all through the night (all through the night)
I could be yours just like before
Rewrite another try
‘Cause we’ve had the loneliest time
If you wanna try, love (If you wanna try me)
(If you wanna try, love)
If you wanna try me (If you leave the light on for me)
(If you wanna try it)
If you leave the light on for me (If you wanna try it)
I just need back into (If you wanna try, love)
I just need back into your life (If you leave the light on for me)
What happened was
We reached the moon
But lost in space, I think we got there all too soon
But you know what
I’m coming back for you, baby
I’m coming back for you
And in the morning
Sun hits the water
Is this nirvana?
And in the morning
Sun hits the water
Is this nirvana?
And in the morning
Sun hits the water
Is this nirvana?

No matter how much the music snob in all of us wants to turn up its nose to Carly Rae Jepsen’s songs, one cannot deny her songwriting gifts for herself and others. Late to the Jepsen party, yes. Too late, NO.
Great vocals, campy video with Disco era flashbacks, Rufus for showgirl antics and his usual 3 octave range tenor vocals, the talky-to-camera cheap conceits. It works for me, how about you? Did I mention the vocal performance?

Carly Rae Jepsen on embracing loneliness, joining a dating app & her relationship with Call Me Maybe
Carly Rae Jepsen may be a huge pop star, but like many of us, she spent a lot of time alone over the last couple years — and she’s the first to admit that it wasn’t always easy. She was separated from her family, mourning the death of someone close to her and dealing with the fear a lot of us felt during the pandemic. But on the flipside of all that, she used that time to explore and reflect on what it means to be lonely. Through that exploration, she created her latest album, The Loneliest Time. Jepsen sat down with Tom Power to tell us more about it.

Her whole insight about connecting with others through song, and not just thinking of herself or her own experiences in writing… Gosh I love her humility! Rarely do we encounter an artist who INTENDS to relate to her audience and includes them in her music.
I’ve always thought CRJ’s music has this timeless universality to them, that her persona/voice takes a step back and just beckons you to join and sing along – that you may be even more important than her being just confessional.
Relatability in music is not a weakness.
