Tina-Turner-Alberto-Venzago

Tina Turner’s legacy as the Queen of Rock is undisputed, but what deepened her connection with fans beyond the music was her powerful spiritual journey. In 1973, after enduring years of turmoil in her relationship with Ike Turner, Tina discovered a life-altering practice through Buddhism. Introduced to chanting by a friend in Los Angeles, she immersed herself in the daily discipline of chanting “Nam-myoho-renge-kyo,” a mantra central to Nichiren Buddhism. It became her sanctuary, offering her not just peace, but also the strength and wisdom to rebuild her life, reclaiming her identity as an artist and a woman.

Turner’s Buddhist faith became a cornerstone of her later years, and it led her to collaborate with other spiritually aligned artists such as Regula Curti and Dechen Shak-Dagsay. In 2011, they came together for the album Children Beyond, a collection of prayers and chants from various religious traditions aimed at fostering unity and peace. Tina’s voice on the album is different from the powerful rock vocals that made her famous—it is softer, more meditative, as if inviting listeners to share in her personal journey to peace.

The chantings and prayers on Children Beyond echo Tina’s own story of transformation. As she sang ancient Hindu and Buddhist mantras, her voice transcended musical boundaries, reflecting the tranquility and resilience she gained from her spiritual path. Her collaboration with Curti and Shak-Dagsay symbolized the unity of diverse spiritual traditions, creating a sacred space for healing through music.

For those, like myself, whose Buddhist practices were born from challenging personal circumstances, Tina Turner’s spiritual journey offers profound inspiration. Just as she found freedom and peace in her chanting practice after leaving an unhealthy relationship, so too do others, including myself, find solace and empowerment through similar spiritual paths. Tina’s chanting not only healed her but also opened a new chapter in her artistic expression—one that embraced healing, compassion, and universal love.

Tina Turner is known around the world as the Queen of rock and will be forever remembered for her legendary high energy performances. While being raised as a baptist, she was introduced to Buddhism by a friend in Los Angeles back in 1973. Tina credits the daily practice of chanting for turning her into an even stronger and wiser woman.

Tina Turner – Lotus Sutra / Purity of Mind (2H Meditation)

The meaning of the Lotus Sutra is ‘I devote my life to the Mystic Law of the Lotus Sutra’.

It is the royal sutra of Nichiren Buddhism in Japan (1253). Coming from India to China and then to Japan, the prayer was translated from the Sanskrit word ‘Saddharma-pundarikasutra » first into classical Chinese as ‘Miao-fa Lien-Hua Ching’ and then into an ancient form of Japanese as ‘Myoho Renge Kyo’.

The word ‘Nam’ derives from the Sanskrit ‘names’ and means ‘devotion’. It is placed before the name of all deities when worshipping them.

‘Myo’ is the name given to the mystic nature of life and ‘Ho’ to its manifestation.

‘Renge’ means lotus flower. The beautiful and undefiled Lotus blooms in a muddy swamp with all the obstacles against it. It symbolizes the emergence of our Buddha nature from the everyday problems and desires of ordinary life. ‘Renge’ stands also for the simultaneity of cause and effect, because the lotus puts forth its flower and seedpod at the same time.

‘Kyo’ literally means sutra, the voice, and the teaching of the Buddha.
It also means sound rhythm or vibration and therefore it might be interpreted to indicate the practice of chanting. Since everything in the universe is connected through sound waves, ‘Kyo » refers to the life activity of universal phenomena and indicates that everything is a manifestation of the Mystic Law.

‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ is the Mystic Law of the Lotus Sutra. An explanation can help you understand, but the Sutra can only be fully appreciated through chanting it.

TINA: ‘However you must do it, to truly understand. When you say ‘Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ it will slowly remove all of the bad decisions you have ever made. The more you repeat the words the more you make your life clearer. The more you chant it the closer you get to your true nature. Your true nature is the right way of thinking and the right way of acting. The longer you go on this path, the more you avoid making wrong decisions. The Lotus Sutra helps me in my daily life. It is indeed mystical! And my life has proven this!’
