Exploring Toni Childs: The Unforgettable Voice of Depth and Emotion

Remember the first time you heard the unmistakable voice of Toni Childs? Perhaps it was through the haunting melodies of “Stop Your Fussin’” or the ethereal strains of “Walk and Talk Like Angels.” No matter the song, your ears likely perked up before your mind even registered this new presence in your musical consciousness. Toni Childs’ voice is unlike any other—a rich, resonant sound that carries an emotional weight few can match. Her music, infused with world influences, feels both expansive and intimate, a testament to her deep artistic vision.

Childs’ career took off with her debut album, Union, released in June 1988. This album quickly established her as a unique force in the music world, blending pop with elements of world music in a way that felt natural and unforced. Union peaked at number 63 in the United States, earning Gold certification with over 500,000 copies sold. Its impact was even more pronounced in New Zealand, where it soared to number one and went 5× Platinum, reflecting sales of 75,000 copies—a remarkable achievement for a debut album.

Union spawned four singles, each highlighting a different facet of Childs’ multifaceted talent. “Stop Your Fussin’” became a standout track, reaching the top 20 in Australia, New Zealand, and Germany, while “Don’t Walk Away” marked her only appearance on the U.S. charts, peaking at number 72. These songs showcased Childs’ ability to blend personal storytelling with broader themes, connecting with listeners on a profound level.

What sets Toni Childs apart is her commitment to authenticity in her music. Her exploration of world music influences isn’t just a superficial flirtation; it’s a full embrace, a deep dive into sounds and traditions that resonate with her own artistic sensibilities. This commitment gives her music a timeless quality, transcending the often fleeting nature of pop trends.

As a fan, Childs’ music has a way of resonating deeply, striking an emotional chord that stays with you long after the final note fades. Her voice, rich in texture and emotion, feels like a conversation, an intimate exchange that pulls you into her world. Whether she’s singing about love, loss, or the human experience, Childs brings a sincerity and depth that is all too rare in the music industry.

For those who have yet to experience the magic of Toni Childs, Union is an excellent place to start. It’s not just an album; it’s an introduction to an artist who defies easy categorization, who invites listeners to join her on a journey of discovery and connection. Her music isn’t just heard—it’s felt, with every note offering a glimpse into the soul of an artist who sings not just with her voice, but with her heart.

Comments:
This first album has the incredible song “Don’t Walk Away”, as well as “Walk and Talk Like Angels.” (jjhanson@att.net)
Union still blows my socks off. (elionwyr@onix.com)

Union has this very eclectic feel. Rock/pop/folk mixed with African instruments and background vocalists. The music is original, fresh, and uncluttered, even though there’s a lot of stuff. I think it’s brilliant. (JoAnn Whetsell)

By all means, track down Union, which has some stunning stuff and is even more steeped in world music than the other two (this, from someone who doesn’t care for world music!).

Toni Childs’ Union: A Powerful Debut from a Singular Voice

Released in 1988, Union announced Toni Childs as a bold new voice in the singer-songwriter landscape. Drawing from her well-traveled life, Childs infuses each track with raw, hypnotic urgency that is both compelling and unforgettable. Her years of experience, including a stint as the original lead singer for Berlin, shine through in this album, creating a rich tapestry of sounds and stories that capture the listener’s attention from the very first note. The album is masterfully tied together by David Tickle’s expert production, supported by a lineup of exceptional musicians, including songwriting collaborator David Ricketts, legendary drummer Rick Marotta, and guitarist David Rhodes.

The album kicks off with the driving single “Don’t Walk Away,” a high-energy track that sets the tone for the rest of Union. Childs’ take-no-prisoners vocal approach powers the funky, horn-driven sound, underscored by the powerful gospel-like chorus of the background singers. The intensity of this opener sets a high bar, and Childs rarely looks back, maintaining a compelling edge throughout the album.

It’s All a Beautiful Noise a New Show by Toni Childs

An immersive music-driven 3D mapping theatre experience by Toni Childs. My show is unique on a few fronts; most notable is that it was designed to keep audiences engaged for up to four months – before, during, and after the show, starting with an eight-meter Bee made out of XBoard that you can walk inside. The skin of my ‘Bee Friendly’ Installation is weaved by 9500 silkworms, and its build launches The BIG Bee Friendly IDEA Project. Three months of community activities before It’s All a Beautiful Noise comes to your town.

When you come to the show, you’ll be given one of six white paper masks of pollinators that I designed in Bai. Each mask has an addressable LED light that I control from the stage. O FUN!! Underneath each mask is a url and at the end of the show I invite audience members to go on a treasure hunt. There, you will experience five online hero moments and possibly win something cool!! At the end of the treasure hunt you are asked to send your mask to a physical location where all the masks become part of a large public installation in that country..

Bee populations have collapsed 61% in the US alone!! I wanted to create an inspirational interactive playdate with both adults and children, with an environmental message, that would travel to regional areas of the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe to inspire people to stop buying chemicals that are contributing to the collapse of our littlest angels, our pollinators.

The theme for my show is “We are all pollinators, what we buy we grow!”

We are actually corporate farmers. If we don’t buy it, it won’t grow. If we don’t buy it, they will make what we buy. Together, we are the deciders because we are the buyers!

I’m currently working with Tigrelab, a creative team that specializes in 3D mapping animation and set design. Based in Barcelona, they are leaders in their field, and I am honored to be working with them and others here in Australia.

I am planning to give a series of underwater concerts for whales and dolphins in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and film my adventure for a unique 45-minute 360-degree experience called ‘Reef 360’. The experience will travel in a 15-meter dome in regional towns and a 20-meter dome in city suburbs. Starting in Perth, we embarked on a two-month journey to film a series of underwater concerts on a vessel that accommodates 17 people and has a two-person submersible on the stern. We will film the big whales to start south of Perth and head north to Ningaloo to perform for the whales and sharks, then sail up across the top end of Australia to the Great Barrier Reef, where I will sing for the Minke whales and other underwater inhabitants in various spots teeming with life on the GBR and other Marine Parks that surround Australia. As I see it, the only way to tell a moving story that inspires action is through awe, wonder, and play. My mission over the coming decade is to give men, women, and children a way to participate in taking care of what is most precious—the ecosystems that keep our biosphere thriving for years to come.
