John Mayer is a polarizing figure in the world of music, not because of his talent, but because of how his personal life often eclipses his remarkable artistic achievements. Yet, for those willing to strip away the tabloid narrative, what remains is a musician whose work has consistently defied easy categorization. Mayer is more than just a chart-topping songwriter; he’s a guitarist of the highest caliber, a master of blues riffs, jazz chords, and pop sensibility. His ability to traverse genres—from pop and rock to blues and jazz—is a testament to his dexterity and deep understanding of music. His career spans decades, each era marked by undeniable growth as a musician and composer.

In taking up the mantle as lead guitarist for Dead and Company, John Mayer faced a challenge most guitarists would be hesitant to accept. Stepping into the shoes of the legendary Jerry Garcia is no small feat. But Mayer, in his own signature way, has turned this challenge into an opportunity to evolve. He has brought a modern energy to the band while never attempting to replace or replicate Garcia. Instead, Mayer’s reverence for the Grateful Dead’s legacy shines through each performance. This humility, combined with his unparalleled guitar playing, has breathed new life into the Grateful Dead’s expansive catalog, allowing it to resonate with a younger audience while satisfying the Deadhead purists.

The chemistry between Mayer and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti is a cornerstone of Dead and Company’s success. Their interplay has a rhythm and fluidity that feels effortless, yet is clearly built on deep mutual respect and musical intuition. Together, they form a dynamic core, infusing the band’s live shows with moments of magic. Mayer’s guitar is often a melodic thread running through the tapestry of sound, while Chimenti’s keys provide the texture and depth that allow the band’s legendary improvisational jams to soar. The musical conversation between the two is often where the real magic happens—on nights when everything aligns, it feels as though they are speaking their own language on stage.

Bobby Weir’s presence adds another layer of richness to this collaboration. The balance between Mayer’s fiery guitar leads and Weir’s rhythm guitar work is striking—Mayer fills in the spaces with flair, while Weir’s experience and subtlety anchor the music in the tradition of the Grateful Dead. Each member of Dead and Company plays an indispensable role, but Mayer’s contribution is unmistakable, proving that his place on that stage isn’t just earned—it’s deserved.

While Mayer’s individual career has often revolved around radio hits, introspective ballads, and bluesy licks, his time with Dead and Company has shown a different side of his musicianship. It’s a deeper, more mature expression of his craft. On stage with Dead and Company, Mayer isn’t the pop star from the ‘Room for Squares’ era or the crooner from ‘Continuum.’ He’s a musician fully in tune with his bandmates, performing for the sake of the music itself, no ego in sight.

The Dead’s live performances have always been more than just concerts—they’re experiences. And Mayer, fully embracing the improvisational spirit of the band, has seamlessly integrated his own musical personality into that experience. Whether it’s a blazing guitar solo or a delicate interplay with the other musicians, his contribution is not simply additive—it’s transformative. His ability to switch between the introspective bluesman and the electrifying jam band lead is a testament to his range and the depth of his artistry.

In the end, Mayer’s tenure with Dead and Company has not just added to his resume; it’s elevated him into a league few guitarists reach. Far from being a mere stand-in for Jerry Garcia, he has become an essential part of the new Dead. For those skeptical of Mayer’s fit within this storied band, watching one of their live performances will likely put those doubts to rest. There is no neutrality on the subject of John Mayer—either you’re on board, or you’re not. But to dismiss him outright would be to miss out on witnessing one of the most exciting evolutions of a musician in recent memory.

October ’22. He just turned 45. One more tour with Dead and Company. A joy he brought to old Deadheads like me – we would never have imagined. I am eternally grateful for how he cared for his role in the Jerry Garcia spot.

Dead & Company performed Sugar Magnolia in 4K from their show at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colorado, on July 14, 2018.

Dead & Company was formed in 2015 when the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, and Bob Weir joined forces with artist and musician John Mayer, Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Fare Thee Well and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The result was one of the most successful touring bands of the decade. The inaugural tour kicked off in the fall of 2015 with two sold-out shows at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City. It ended with two sold-out performances at the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in Inglewood, California. Since then, the band has completed five tours, playing to more than 1.5 million fans, and has become a record-breaking stadium act. Dead & Company has headlined iconic stadiums across the country, including Folsom Field, Autzen Stadium, Citi Field, Fenway Park, and Dodger Stadium. Additionally, the band broke Wrigley Field’s all-time concert attendance record in 2017. Dead & Company’s 2018 Summer Tour ranked in the top 25 of the Top 100 Worldwide Tours, and for the past two years, their Summer Tours ranked in the top 15 of the Top Global Concert Tours.

Truly a treat to catch Oteil Burbridge, brother, and bandmate to the much-loved, easy-to-remember, hard-to-forget Kofi Burbridge.

I remember back in freshman year of high school my art teacher would always play this album while we worked on our art projects. It was so calming and peaceful and this music really helped to add euphoria to my anxiety-filled day of school. Now I’m in college, but I still look back on this time and smile while listening to this album. 😊

In 2010, John Mayer was in a crisis. A number of interviews left him with an image he’d been so desperately trying to escape, and on top of this, vocal surgery meant he could not sing or speak. But this time was a blessing in disguise. The music from this time, Born and Raised, offered a new musical perspective. Something that would stick with him for years to come. When John’s describing the songs being bigger than him, I felt that. I’ve seen him three times in concert and have followed his career since I was pubescent. Each and every album deeply represents a time in my life. He’s a time capsule I can revisit whenever I want. I can always find new meaning in the songs as I grow as well. Timeless. I have so much respect for him as a musician and a man. Great interview!

Steely Dan – Gaslighting Abbie

Cincinnati-Toronto soundboard recording.

We include this track and perhaps a few additional ones in case you need an antidote (mind cleanse) after reading and listening to this article about reformed EGO addict John Mayer.  While writing and researching the subject of John Mayer, I have a newfound respect for the man, his music, and this most recent collaboration with Dead and Company.  I especially enjoy the obvious onstage/offstage respect John has for Bob Weir and the camaraderie with keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and bassist Oteil Burbridge.  It is evident that the Mayer has matured well and, as the Dead Heads have noticed, carried on the legacy of Jerry with grace and humility. One thing any objective musician will acknowledge about John Mayer is his commitment to the creative process and his outstanding lead guitar proficiency. He enrolled in Berklee in 1997 and completed two semesters before moving to Atlanta, Ga. How many of us could get accepted at the prestigious Berklee School of Music, in Boston?

Through the early 2000s, he performed, toured, and recorded prolifically, winning acclaim for such hits as “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” which won a 2003 Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocalist, and “Daughters,” which won a 2005 Grammy for Song of the Year. Two more songs won Grammys in 2006. He also collaborated with blues and jazz artists such as Buddy Guy and Herbie Hancock, gaining recognition for his guitar work.
